SG Shared Experiences

Foreword

Singapore is a diverse society where people of different races, religions, languages and cultures work and live together. This multicultural fabric has been a part of our history since our founding in 1819. While misunderstandings between people of different races may occur from time to time, we have been able to resolve the misunderstandings without jeopardising our strong sense of being Singaporeans.

We all share the same aspirations for a loving home, a harmonious society, and to give our children the best opportunities in life. Beyond material matters, Singaporeans of all creeds also experience many common challenges within the family, and this commonality also unites us.

The anxiety that parents have when they engage their rebellious teenage children, the struggle to balance family and work, and the commitment to national service are examples of our shared journeys, regardless of race, religion or citizenship background. These are milestones that we can all identify with.

This book is an interesting contribution to understanding integration through our day-to-day narratives. The twelve immigrant stories will resonate with many. They will also serve as a thought-provoking and, at times, poignant take on shared experiences among people living on the little red dot.
